Masha
(1909 - 0)
“Masha” was the pen name for Maria Simchow Stern. She was born in New York of Jewish-Russian parents. Her childhood was spent in Brooklyn. Although the circumstances of her family were far from comfortable, there was always a wealth of intellectual ideals.
The name of Simkhovitch had been slightly Americanized to Simchow, and the family was proud of the artists and poets and writers it was producing.
Stern attended the Pratt Institute and Art Students League in New York. She went on to work as a designer at a novelty firm for nine years. That helped develop her understanding of technique and style, the public’s taste and her own talents. Then she focused on illustrating books.
She was married and lived in New York.
